We rode the 10 kms on my motorbike as we headed out of town, before turning right and down the narrow little lane. It comes to a sudden end at the “secret beach”, where we stopped and got off. The tide was right out, revealing black granite rocks which are normally hidden under the gentle waves. We walked along the broad sweep of sand to the other end of the cove and sat down. There was no one there, except for a Thai man and two young teenage boys, who were frolicking in the sea, some distance from us. The crickets’ singing in the jungle behind us was loud, as we lay there in the heat of the afternoon sun. Birds sang in the trees also, but the jungle was too dense for us to see them. The odd butterfly fluttered past, some were yellow and some large black ones, on their quest for the nectar from the cactus flowers which were blooming on the edge of the tree line.
He took my hand as we lay there smiling at the peace. The gentle waves splashing on the sand, making it glisten in the bright sunshine. The man and the two boys were shouting and laughing with glee, as they splashed each other in the warm waters. They seemed oblivious to us as they carried on with their game of trying to pull each other’s shorts down. Now and again, a shiny wet bottom was revealed to us, as one or the other scored another point.
An ancient fishing boat, with high points at each end, was passing off shore. The distant sound of its labouring little engine, just making it to our ears. It was travelling quite slowly, so must have been full of freshly caught fish.
At that moment, nothing else existed in the world, just us and the beach at that little cove.
This is how I spent last Sunday afternoon in Paradise!
